For my explore project I choose to do an acrylic painting. I picked out a Retro Jordan logo that I drew and then chose colors to paint. I chose red, black, and white since those are the Chicago Bulls colors, Michael Jordan's team. I chose to do this picture because I am big into basketball and its by far my favorite sport. And I also thought that this logo looked really cool, and I really like the way it turned out with the colors.
For my clay project I shaped and glazed a basketball shoe that I like. I found the idea from seeing other people make other kinds of shoes and wanted to make something that I like. The specific shoe that I made is my favorite basketball player's signature shoe, Kyrie Irving 1. I made the colors on the shoe match a pair that he wore the first time he wore the shoe in a game.
In this project I took a risk and tried making art that I hadn't tried before, and liked the way it turned out. I usually just draw for my art, but this time I took another piece of work by a different artist and modified it. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at first for this project, but after looking at some of Ben Giles' works, I wanted to try a similar thing.
Something else I did in this project was steal like an artist. I used someone else's work and modernized it. I took a work of Don Eddy's called "Dreamreader's Table III". I had to make it different so I used magazines with modern images and cut them out. I used them to bring more character to another artists' work. I was inspired by Ben Giles and used Don Eddy's work to create similar ideas. I was also able to reflect through my work by planning out where I wanted every magazine cut out to go. I had to make sure the magazine cut-outs were placed in a spot that made sense in the original picture. For example, I placed the sleeping cowboy on the horizon, that way his head was resting on the hill. I put the walrus popping out of the water in the sea so it looked as if it were meant to be there. I decided to use the melon as the sun to make it seem more unique, as well as the car driving cross the rainbow. Lastly, I put the bird and squirrel on the table to make it seem like they were attracted there by the food. In this project I had to plan out and think about where I wanted to go with my work. There were a lot of little details that I had to think about and plan like the tattoo's on the arms. I wanted to draw the tattoo's since they have meaning to them, such as sayings or slogans. I also wasn't sure what I wanted to do with all the blank space on the paper, so I thought of multiple ways to incorporate the Lebron James signature logo. I even used a rough draft to experiment with colors and ideas.
I also used modern images in my art that I think kept my interest. I drew professional basketball player Lebron James, who is the most popular athlete in the world. I think the fact that the picture I observed and drew was fairly recent, made it so I had more ideas and options for my work. The image I drew was the Lebron James powder toss which he does before games to pump up the crowd. |
